Butterfly book

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 18, 2009

Sooooooooo intrigued by the book The Dangerous World of Butterflies by Peter Laufer after seeing it discussed on The Daily Show last night. After my trip to the Butterfly Palace in Branson, Mo., in May, I am fascinated with butterflies (especially as metaphor) more than ever.

More to come on that …

Just what I needed

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 17, 2009

A good day for friendship. Coffee and conversation with Kathi in Hoboken. Dinner and catching up with Deb in the city.

Pure treasure.

Tell the truth

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 17, 2009

You know how sometimes the truth hurts, but ultimately it could be helpful to hear? Or at least we hope so. That’s the topic in today’s Game Plan: Truth in Business.

Salty and sweet

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 15, 2009

Don’t know what possessed me to have guacamole and blue chips for dinner. I’m going with the laziness theory. Watermelon for dessert.

That’s not bad. Not at all.

High praise

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 12, 2009

This came in response to today’s Game Plan column:

Certainly Ms. Colasurdo is not lacking in self esteem.

A terrific compliment, considering the amount of due diligence I’ve spent on emotional well-being. Thank you.

Right for the job

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 12, 2009

With all the talk about ethnicity and gender floating around Supreme Court justice nominee Sonia Sotomayor, these topics were already on my mind. But then I happened on an article in The Daily News about Melody Morales, who has sued a Manhattan eatery for alleged racist comments in connection with a job interview.

Whether these particular women are the best candidates for the job is not for me to decide, but I can do my part to elevate the national discussion. So I drew on what I know: my days as a sports writer and a decided minority.

This Game Plan draws on my feeling that too many are missing the bigger point: Are Background, Ethnicity, and Gender Job Assets?

The fast

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 11, 2009

Regular readers of this space know I have opted for the “head in the sand” approach to political news for the better part of this year. It’s made for a more peaceful existence.

Well, in the last day or so I decided to pull my head out of the sand and get a fix. I find when you’re not fed this stuff regularly, it’s easier to spot the spin and see what’s real and what’s drama. Hate. Blame. Name calling. Lies. Jockeying for position. So scary. So disconcerting.

I’m going back down under to bliss out for a while.

My trip to the dentist

by Nancy Colasurdo on June 10, 2009

My day began with a broken molar, so I went to the dentist to get it bonded. But me being me, I took it as a sign that yes indeed teeth can crack and so the crown on another tooth I’d been putting off for financial reasons needed to be scheduled and dealt with.

I sat in the chair to wait for the good doctor and what is the artwork on the wall before me? The classic 1951 photograph by Ruth Orkin called American Girl in Italy (check out the woman’s outfit — totally in style right now). I had to laugh at the irony, since the aforementioned crown will cost me roughly the same price as a trip across the pond to lay eyes on the Tuscan hills.

Ah, priorities.
