Great column, Nance. And so true. I’m still feeling the aching loss of Michael Jackson. While so many talk about his tortured life, his music often expresses the pure joy of the beat, and that can’t be faked.
I watched a shortened version of the Bashir interview the other night, and luckily they aired my favorite part, where Jackson talks about his creative process. As a songwriter, I understood so deeply a lot of what he said, especially about where the songs come from…”above.”
When I listen to my own work from years ago, I’m sometimes astonished, feeling truly like I didn’t create it as much as shepherded it into existence. There are few things in life that compare with that kind of joy, and Jackson had plenty of it. It’s so sad that he’s gone, but his legacy–at least in terms of his music–will forever be a treasure.
