The word ‘angling’ has been coming up a lot for me lately. That’s the best way to describe how this Game Plan column came about. It’s partly about politics, but it’s mostly about how we angle way too much in our lives. It just doesn’t feel good. How about some pure intent?
Today’s Game Plan: Why ‘What’s in it for me?’ Doesn’t Work
Amen. As we age, I think it becomes more of a challenge to believe that others are not working some angle. But we have to trust.
I did work briefly for Capital One Bank one of their core values is “assume positive intent.” I like that.
If someone turns out not to have that, for whatever reason, you have to let go and move on.
But you have to start by believing somebody isn’t working an angle, or you’ll become cynical and start working those angles yourself.
(I just found your blog. I look forward to reading more.)
Hi Matt —
Thank you for the thoughtful comments on my column. I particularly love the Capital One Bank core value that you name. It makes such a difference in our interactions, doesn’t it?
