As I walked through the Alexander McQueen “Savage Beauty” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last week, I said to my friend Kathi, “These words just popped into my head — he had his say.” And a theme for a column was born, augmented a day later when I was watching the debut of Lady GaGa’s HBO special with my mother on Mother’s Day weekend.

It wasn’t until I was actually writing the piece, essentially about legacy, that the inspiring women I’d seen honored just days before at the Auburn Lives of Commitment Breakfast came rushing in — Kayrita Anderson, Deborah Richardson, Bishop Minerva Carcano, Jensine Larsen, Gail T. Reimer and Chely Wright. Just joyful.
