One of the most creative aspects of The Inferno of Dante (and there are many) is the way he chose to dispense punishment to the various categories of sinners. They are all in Hell, so there is no appealing choice, but his imagination is mind-blowing.
My favorite so far is in Canto XX. In it he deals with soothsayers and astrologers, those who dare to try to predict the future. For Amphiaraus, a seer in Greek mythology:
Making his shoulders his breast; because his purpose
Was seeing too far ahead, he looks behind
And stumbles backwards.
