Oh, that Reverend Mother

You never know when watching The Sound of Music for the umpteenth time will get you thinking. Last weekend, as Maria and the children cavorted and a love story unfolded, I had a moment. The next thing you know, a Game Plan column was born: Looking for Your Life in 2010.

The woman behind ‘Little Women’

Just watched a PBS program on author Louisa May Alcott and enjoyed it immensely. Had no idea that among the writers and educators that taught her was Ralph Waldo Emerson and that she was an abolitionist and feminist. She wrote until her death at age 55.

Makes me want to revisit Little Women.

9/11 hero wins big

While I was away celebrating Christmas with family, one of my most gratifying Game Plan columns went live. Mike and Fran Kosowski are special people and I so enjoyed chronicling a bit of their life-altering decade in 9/11 Hero Wins Million-Dollar Poker Challenge.

A social leap

A few weeks ago when a trusted colleague invited me to a party shrouded in mystery, I accepted. That was my first leap. I went into New York that evening and the surprises unfolded, courtesy of host Shelley Hainer.

As you’ll see in today’s Game Plan, what ensued was A Feast With a Message.

Closing 2009 with joy

Looking forward to seeing family for Christmas and then some fun lunch dates planned with old friends while I’m hanging in my old stompin’ grounds in Central Jersey.

As for you, dear readers, may there be at least moments in your holiday season that soothe your soul and may you discover or rediscover the meaning of true wealth in your life.

Loud and clear

Read and thoroughly enjoyed the book He’s Just Not That Into You when it first hit the shelves. Just caught the movie on cable and really liked it.

As one who can rarely be convinced anything is a coincidence, I can’t help but think I was supposed to hear its message this particular week.

‘Nuff said.

Conscientious consuming

One of the true signs, I believe, that you’re up to the task of being not just a writer but a twice-weekly columnist is when a single piece of mail can send you off on a tangent that turns into a thoughtful column. Good feeling.

So here you see how a letter from CREDO Mobile became the latest Game Plan: Challenges of Conscientious Consuming.

Quintessential Mom

I had a friend once who wanted to meet my mother because he couldn’t imagine what genetic circumstances could have produced my looney self. Here I present an example that says it all.

I received a lovely card in the mail this week with a picture of a sweet young girl in a longish green dress that says, “Daughter, Remember when you were a kid and wanted to grow up and become something special?”

When you open it, it says, “You did!”

Very touching sentiment. And she knows I love meaningful cards, so even better. I hung it on the door frame with my other holiday cards, but it fell off and I noticed writing on the back.

It reads, “I certainly dressed you a lot better than that little waif on the front!” It’s signed with an “M” in case I was wondering.

I laughed out loud. Gotta love the Italian mother.

And I’m so glad she doesn’t read this blog …

Bring that sarcasm

Priceless piece of work by Samantha Bee on The Daily Show:

Obama’s Socialist Christmas Ornament Program

This is how comedy is done.
