The recent juxtaposition of President Obama’s commencement address at the University of Michigan and the appearance of former First Lady Laura Bush on The Oprah Winfrey Show held up a mirror for me in the area of niceness in our political discourse. Seeing what a kindergartner wrote to the president and watching Mrs. Bush and her daughters, Barbara and Jenna, speak with Winfrey really put my mind in motion.
