I’m not one to pay much attention to American Idol, so when the opportunity to interview 2006 winner Taylor Hicks came along I went into it with no preconceived notions. Researching the piece proved to be entertaining, but also enlightening.
Our actual sitdown felt conversational and I enjoyed his thoughtfulness as he let me lead him down a bit of a spiritual road. I could have easily spent another few hours delving into what makes him tick.
Today’s Game Plan: Checking in with an ‘American Idol’
Its not very often when someone in the media “gets” Taylor as well as you did in this piece. I am also from Alabama and can relate to what he says about the people of the South. We are also passionate and giving people with fierce independent streaks-so forgive me if I “understand” Taylor from a cultural perspective as well.
With all the snarks out there and the ever-pressing media “eye” it is great to have such a positive piece to promote Taylor’s “voice” being heard. As a card carrying proud “Soul Patroller” fan of Taylor’s I appreciate your positive slant to his career and the fact that his voice is not that of others-which is WHY I’m a fan!!
BTW-I also love “let go and let God”- Thanks for a wonderful interview!!
This is the highest of compliments. Thank you for the feedback!
Nancy — What a great, insightful interview! I especially love the spiritual undertones in some of Taylor’s responses — he must have trusted you to let you pull those thoughts & feelings out of him. He has inspired some of us in ways that he might not ever realize — to follow our dreams, to help each other emotionally, etc. Taylor has a natural talent for music — continually studying, performing, & writing music — but he also has a natural empathy for those who might need his support. I believe that his music is an integral part of who he is — and now it’s making me realize that music — not just Taylor’s — is a part of who I am, too.
Thank you for the thoughtful comments. I suppose it is the life coach in me that brings out these things in people. They trust because they sense I’m genuinely interested in what they’re saying.
I really appreciate you taking the time to write. And best of luck with your music!
