I knew very little about the film Precious when I went to see a screening last week. What I did know was that Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry were so moved by it that they put their muscle behind it and that Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd and Lenny Kravitz act in the film.
Then, as we sat waiting for the movie to begin, we were given a warning by our hosts that it was very graphic and that we’d be seeing some horrible things. We did. I spent some time looking at my lap and gasping at what was unfolding. The moments of humor along the way were most welcome. The actors mentioned above turned in moving performances, as did lead Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe.
After I left the theatre, I had no intention of writing a column about it. But as the weekend wore on it stuck with me and this Game Plan poured out: All You Need Is Politeness.
Thank you for a very well written and well thought out article. Thank you for reminding us about some very very basic things that make such a big difference in someone else’s life. I have not watched the movie, but after your stunning review, I certainly expect to do so. It is always a challenge to figure out when to ‘insert’ ourselves into someone else’s life: How does one know that their message of ‘concern’ will be received with gratitude. What if someone tells you to ‘mind your own business?’ However, there are so many hurting people that I think you’re right, no harm can come from showing some subtle form of politeness. It just makes life so much easier for anyone shouldering a burden. I for one, will follow your lead and look for opportunities to ‘lessen’ the burden by being kind. Thank you.
Patricia, thank you so much for the feedback.
I will share with you what I say to others who have a similar response: If there is or has been any abuse in your life, please bring someone who can support you when you go see the movie.
This movie is an amazing step in crossing the “appropriate” boundary and perhaps the best project Oprah has ever supported. We needed this film, because it is fearless and reeks of an ugly truth in our society and only getting to know it will begin to reap understanding among all. Congratulations to Lee Daniels.
Hope this is the beginning of many more tell-all films with substance.
