Those of you who read this blog regularly or who get my monthly life coaching newsletter are well aware by now of the story of my formerly homeless client, Mirna Zapata, who competed in the USA World Showcase in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend. After winning a first-place trophy in the Solo Female Potential Performer category at the competition, she was eligible to win the grand prize, which is based on online voting.
Well, try as she might, she placed in the top 60, but then didn’t clear the top 40 this week, so she is officially out of the competition. On behalf of Mirna, I wholeheartedly thank all who voted for her. What a run she had.
Today we had a fabulous session, one where we extracted the lessons learned from this experience and where we laid out a plan as Mirna moves forward. This is a multi-talented and creative woman and I am so excited to be along on her journey.
Again, thank you all for enriching her life with your support.

All it took was a dinner at the Tribeca Grill to get my mind rolling on The Power of Food in today’s Game Plan column on FOXBusiness.com. Holistic health practitioner and co-founder of Just Habits For Life, Mary Tafuri, adds her two cents, as does founder and CEO of Laughing Sage Wellness, Alisa Vitti.
It’s common sense, really. Equip yourself with good information about food and see the difference it will make in your life!

This note from a former life coaching client made my day!
Dear Nancy,
This is to express my appreciation for your superb coaching – I was writing ‘counseling’ and quickly changed it. I know by intent and deed you are a coach, not someone over me telling me what I need to do differently or what I didn’t do right, but a coach supporting me toward my own goal.
Several weeks I could have felt like some ‘counseling’ was in order because I hadn’t done everything on the list we created together. Instead of taking me to task, you highlighted everything I’d done even accidentally on point, enabling me to see that my intentions were indeed carrying me in my chosen direction even when life appeared to intervene.
You listen exceedingly well and you helped me by restating and clarifying what you understood me to be saying. Sometimes I’m sure that was like pulling teeth from a tiger since I wasn’t clear what I wanted myself. You helped me set my own goals and then to reshape them as I realized in talking with you which parts didn’t fit. You helped me adopt measuring tools that were comfortable, like time frame, dollar amounts, and numbers of clients. On occasion it seemed the goal was met almost as soon as you helped me identify it.
One of my favorite things about working with you is that every time we talk I come away feeling higher. I could begin a session feeling too tired and too empty to participate and by the end, feel ready to take on my world. You have so helped in shortening the time (and the angst) from there to here and from here to my next horizon.
I recruited you to hold me accountable to myself and you’ve done that magnificently. At the same time, I am just thrilled to see how your own career is blossoming. What a gift you are to the world!
Love and Huge Blessings!
Lois

Decided to skip Buddhist meditation class tonight. Needed a break from it.
But the waterfront at Pier A Park was calling me and my music, so I spent an hour just zoning out to rock ‘n roll. Nothing like watching the Manhattan skyline go from light to dusk to dark. So beautiful and inspiring.

Frustration changed to laughter at some point this week as I listened to pundits talk about how Barack Obama — running around the Middle East and Europe — should stop acting like he’s president. What a hoot. This trip is all about an age-old approach to going for a goal: act as if.
Pick up any respectable motivational, spiritual, financial, or business book and in some form you’ll find this advice — prepare for the outcome you desire. Today’s Game Plan column is about Acting As If It’s Already Yours and includes quotes from William James, Florence Scovel Shinn and Wayne Dyer.
Go ahead, act as if the world is your oyster. See what happens.

Wore my new Ramon Tenza shoes to dinner in Tribeca tonight. Nothing like gorgeous, sleek footwear to make a woman feel like a million bucks.

Something about reading The New York Times story on Si Newhouse last Sunday sparked me to write about retirement in today’s Game Plan column — Thinking Twice About Retirement. I have, in my lifetime, drawn a paycheck from Newhouse (when I worked for The Trenton Times) and from Rupert Murdoch (FOXSports.com and FOXBusiness.com) and I don’t see either of these men slowing down any time soon.
I love the idea of working until I’m good and ready not to. There is joy and passion in that.

Three dynamic life coaching sessions today. Just an amazing feeling to come away knowing clients are making progress in tangible ways.
It’s heady, really.

Just started reading Authentic Happiness by Martin E. P. Seligman, Ph.D. He had me at this:
For every one hundred journal articles [in the field of psychology] on sadness, there is only one on happiness.
